Assessing Penile Implants for Erectile Dysfunction

February 8, 2013 by Perry

Men suffering from erectile dysfunction can have penile implants as a solution. There are 3 types of penile implants namely: non-inflatable implants, two-piece inflatable implant and multi-component inflatable penile implant.

Penile implant, internal penile pump, penile prosthesis and inflatable penile prosthesis are all considered as multi-component inflatable penile prosthesis. The internal penile pump is a soft fluid-filled device which consists of water and salt which can expand and contract without losing elasticity.Penile Implants for Erectile Dysfunction

Non-Inflatable Penile Implant

Advantages

All parts of the device are implanted inside the body making it totally hidden. It is easy to use for both you and your partner. For an erection, you have to bend it up while down if not in use. It’s a good option for surgeons who have less surgical experience since this requires only a simple surgical procedure.

Disadvantages

Permanent erection can be bothersome for many men and can lead to strange feeling and abnormal appearance. Only 20% are performed in USA. It also causes damage and thinning of penile flesh after long use. It is expensive which is an advantage for men not covered by insurance. Most painful and uncomfortable post-op since th4e penis needs to adjust to a constant erection.

Two-Piece Inflatable Penile Implant

Advantages

This is a good option for men who have limited skills in using their hands especially those who have arthritis. It can be simply pump up for an erection and down when not in use.

Disadvantages

It makes the penis look like a broom with a square head because the cylinders have unnatural shape. The penis is not as firm as the multi-component inflatable device since only a small amount of fluid is transferred into the cylinders to have an erection. Because all parts of the device are implanted inside the body, it is very annoying to have a partial erection. The pump is so small and that it is difficult to inflate. Over time, it can cause damage and thinning of penile flesh.

Multi-Component Inflatable Penile Implant

Advantages

The softer larger pump makes it easier to inflate than a two-piece device. All parts of the device are implanted inside the body. The sex partner does not notice that the penis has an implant in it. You can easily pump it up for an erection and simply press the release valve above the pump to deflate. It is the most rigid among the implants since more fluid are transferred into the cylinders to obtain an erection. It provides better flaccidity to the penile shaft when not in use.

Disadvantages

After the surgery, the penis is flaccid that’s why the patient will experience less pain.

Conclusion:

Penile implant is one solution to erectile dysfunction, but this is not free from pain and can cause damage. However, erection problems can be solved with the use of natural supplements and this helps relax the blood vessels in the penis thus results to large volume of blood which creates a harder organ during sexual intercourse.
